This page lists the cookies and similar technologies Everyday Tech Reviews uses, who sets them, why, and how you can control them. It goes with our Privacy Policy.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Some are essential for a site to work; others remember your preferences, measure how a site is used, or support advertising. Related technologies such as local storage and pixels do similar jobs, and this page covers them too.
The cookies we use
| Category | Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | wordpress_test_cookie | This site | Checks that your browser accepts cookies | Session |
| Essential | comment_author_* | This site | Remembers your name, email and website after you comment so you need not retype them | About 1 year |
| Essential | Consent choice | Consent notice | Remembers whether you accepted or declined optional cookies | About 1 year |
| Analytics | _ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics | Distinguishes visitors and sessions so we can count visits and see which guides help | Up to 2 years |
| Advertising | IDE, test_cookie, __gads, __gpi, __gsas, NID | Google AdSense / DoubleClick | Serves ads, limits how often you see one, measures ad performance and, with consent, personalises ads | Up to 13 months (longer outside the EU) |
| Embedded content | YSC, VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE and others | YouTube (Google) | Set only when a page contains an embedded video; remembers playback preferences and measures views | Session to about 6 months |
| Embedded content | Varies | Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Threads, Bluesky | Set only on pages with an embedded post from that service | Varies |
| Newsletter | Local storage entry | MailerLite | Remembers whether you have seen or submitted the sign-up form | Until cleared |
| Site services | Varies | Jetpack (Automattic) | Aggregate site statistics and image delivery | Session to about 1 year |
When you click an Amazon link you leave this site, and Amazon sets its own cookies on amazon.com to credit the visit to us. Those cookies are governed by Amazon’s privacy notice, not by this page.
Consent
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, analytics and advertising storage are switched off when the page loads and stay off until you accept them in the consent notice (Google Consent Mode). Declining means you still see the full site with non-personalised ads. You can change your choice at any time from the privacy settings link in the footer or by clearing this site’s cookies in your browser, which brings the notice back.
Elsewhere, optional cookies are set when you arrive unless you block them, and the opt-outs below apply.
How to control cookies
- Personalised advertising: Google Ads Settings, aboutads.info/choices (US), Network Advertising Initiative (US), youronlinechoices.eu (Europe).
- Analytics: the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.
- Your browser: every browser lets you view, block and delete cookies. Help pages: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge.
- Global Privacy Control: a browser setting or extension that sends an opt-out signal; it is honoured where our advertising provider’s tools recognise it.
Blocking essential cookies may stop commenting from working; blocking the rest does not affect reading the site.
